How to make a photo website?
Friday, 27 April 2007

For those interested in some technical information about this site:
It is built upon the free CMS system Joomla! that I just like a lot for several reasons:
1. it is free
2. it has a lot of great free add-ons and components
3. there is a great support community
4. even an amateur like me can produce a relatively sofisticated web page without any (worth mentioning) scripting and coding knowledge... You can judge :-).

For this site I used the original "madeyourweb" template and tweaked it a bit to fit my colour preferences.
As for other components I used:
- Exposé Flash Gallery - provides wonderful front-end design as well as convenient back-end management features
- Blogg-X - a great desktop SW that allows offline preparation of content which I´m using as a kind of blog component.

- SlideShow - for front page intro slideshow

- AkoComment - for comments and votes
- EasyBook - as a simple feedback list feature
- DF Contact and Security Images - for contact form
- JoomlaStats - for back-end traffic statistics

...and couple of others that I´m just getting acquainted with, like JoomFish, Artio JoomSEF and other SEF and SEO components etc.

Creating a blog with Joomla!
Friday, 27 April 2007
As I was working on this site I got stuck on the issue of a (photo)blog. The gallery I just love - Exposé Flash gallery - is very nice, but I wanted to have something that can be also SEO-friendly. I wanted my images to be searchable. The idea of a photoblog seemed to offer some solution. As I was searching for some Joomla! blog component I was not quite satisfied with any of the solutions offered. While still looking around I started to create my own solution based on the available components. And then I ran across this interesting article that confirmed my direction:
